creating a life plan questions

Experience teaches you nothing. Evaluated experience teaches you everything.
– Andy Stanley

This is my favorite time of year.

The New Year is approaching, so I’m reflecting back on the last year and planning for the year ahead.

With my new found love of planners (see my fav planners here), I have been digging into what works and what doesn’t for life planning and life design. In the Law Of Attraction Planner, there’s a section in the beginning that talks about questions you should ask yourself (in addition to a ton of other things).

Shortly after reading through that planner, I listened to a fantastic podcast where Lewis Howes interviewed Brendon Burchard where he was promoting his book High Performance Habits. In it, he said that the greatest people in the world are always asking themselves questions, seeking clarity, and defining what they want long term.

All of these things prompted me to start thinking about the questions I was asking myself. I realized that there are specific questions I should ask myself every year to shape my goals and plans for the future.

I know I can’t control the outcome of what happens, but by pursuing goals and heading in an intentional direction, I increase my likelihood of success tenfold. So, that’s when I came up with these questions.

I also put them in Dream Year, the goal setting workbook I created specifically with the deep thought work in mind.

These are questions that will help you design your ideal life. While life is full of craziness and uncertainties, you can still do your part to increase the odds that you end up where you want to be.

To give yourself the best odds possible for designing your dream life, ask yourself these 21 questions.

Creating A Life Plan Questions

Here is a look at the questions you should ask yourself to have your best year ever…

Big Picture Questions:

Start by asking yourself big picture questions. These will lead you toward a specific type of life. Otherwise, your choices will be sporadic and random and unlikely to truly lead you toward a fulfilling life that you wanted.

  1. How do you want to be remembered?
  2. What are your core values?
  3. What do you want to contribute to the world?
  4. What do you want to experience in your life if time and money weren’t an issue?
  5. What makes you the most happy?
  6. What inspires you?
  7. What does a successful life look like to you?

Reflection Questions:

Next up are the reflection questions. These questions will help you evaluate your choices in life so far. Like the quote in the beginning of this post says – you have to evaluate your experiences in order to learn to make better choices in the future.

  1. What are your biggest successes in your life?
  2. What are your biggest failures?
  3. What do you regret in your life?
  4. Where are you now in each area of your life?
  5. What do you want to change the most in your life?
  6. What do you love the most in your life?
  7. What are you most grateful for?
  8. What are you afraid of?

Commitment Question:

There is only one commitment question. It gets you to create a commitment to yourself for the next year. If you can articulate and write down what you’re committed to for one year, you’ll be so much more likely to achieve it or move in that direction.

  1. What are you committed to working toward and accomplishing in the next year?

Short-Term Goal Questions:

The short-term goal questions will help you think about your decisions in the short-term and whether they align with the bigger picture answers you gave in the beginning. If there’s a disconnect you’ll have to adjust what you’re doing if you want to create your dream life. This is also a great way to keep focused on what’s most important to you.

  1. What are you doing this year to move you toward your dreams?
  2. What are you doing this month to move you toward your dreams?
  3. What are you doing this week to move you toward your dreams?
  4. What are you doing today to move you toward your dreams?
  5. What does your ideal workday look like?
